Description

We follow each of the equally flawed characters over the course of the year after the announcement and see how it affects them all. Like Waller-Bridge's Fleabag and Rooney's Marianne, Nicole is her own woman: a complex and satisfying presence. In contrast Jamie has been seeing his girlfriend Lucy for years and their wedding is inevitable and imminent- but is it what he really wants? Nicole jest skupioną na karierze singielką, która również zaczyna zastanawiać się nad wyborami, których dokonała.

This is such a real portrayal of family life, warts and all, that it took my breath away with its accuracy. But as the siblings grapple with the pressures of thirtysomething life, their parents struggle to protect the fragile facade of their own relationship, and the secrets they've both been keeping. The subtle observations described in such intricate detail mean that this is a fly on the wall story like no other. As he pulls out his phone, the next sentence reads ‘She could tell immediately that it was a video of a child.Filled with razor-sharp dialogue and psychological acuity, At the Table is an astute debut novel about dysfunctional family life.

Their lives have been marked by meals, and this focuses on a year in their lives at different moments. Tää oli tosi koskettava kirja, Sally Rooneyn tyyliin sellainen, että tässä ei oikeastaan tapahdu yhtään mitään, mutta hahmojen elämässä tapahtuu paljon! We start with a meal where the parents reveal they’re getting divorced and we end with a meal shared with mother and daughter who are, due to the events they’ve been through, forging a new relationship. This is beautifully observed and will be familiar to anyone who is a mother or a daughter - the compliments, the nagging and the antagonising - the done in just a few words with the conversation moving quickly on. A year of lunches, dinners and drinks we become acquainted with the Maguires, Powell’s witty, smartly observed prose gives us a sense of them all.

Family dynamics move continually and this novel shows a particularly intense period of shifting loyalties. The neighborhood looks different too, but she’s still the same woman and it’s still the same place, and as the past erupts into view, they slowly collide. Jedyne określenie jakie przychodzi mi do głowy to że ta książka jest bardzo płaska, bohaterowie też, niby coś się dzieje ale jakby nic. There are funny moments in this book, but overall I’d say it’s such a well-realised character study of a “normal” suburban family that the overwhelming feeling reading it is how intensely intimate it is. Each chapter has a meal (or drink, lots of drinks) and Claire Powell's writing and characters are funny and heartbreaking and moreish. The characters and their motivations were so criminally underdeveloped, I still don’t know why anyone did anything or what I was supposed to feel when they did it.

I was expecting an easy read with funny parts here and there and instead it was like having an inside look into someone’s home. To Nicole and Jamie Maguire, their parents seem the ideal couple - a suburban double act, happily married for more than thirty years.

But as the siblings grapple with the pressures of thirtysomething life, their parents struggle to protect the fragile façade of their own relationship, and the secrets they've both been keeping. Potem odcina od siebie matkę, którą uważa za winną rozstania, choć… wcale nikt z rodziny nie dał jej tego do zrozumienia. The way that Powell navigates heartache, depression, anxiety, and just not really knowing what your next step in life is, is truly exceptional.
