Slightly Foxed brings back forgotten voices through its Slightly Foxed and Plain Foxed Editions, a series of beautifully produced little pocket hardback reissues of classic memoirs, all of them absorbing and highly individual. Be it the tension aboard a capsizing sailboat, around a barbeque gone wrong or the peace of a solitary early morning walk through a dewy forest, Stegner makes us feel present.

To an extent this whole book is the story of one woman’s plan (the wife of the main character’s best friend) for the four of them: a matriarchy in a sense. I acknowledge Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the traditional custodians of the nation in which I live. Soon after their arrival in Wisconsin and desperately short of money, the Morgans meet another young couple at a similar stage in their lives – Sid Lang, another young member of the English Department, and his vibrant, beautiful and headstrong wife, Charity. I don’t want to end on heaviness, so let’s get to the unifying theme, or idea, of the novel – friendship. In Crossing to Safety we live with the characters as they acquire their scar tissue, right till the very end.

But apart from the themes/ideas, I loved this book mainly because I loved these four people and took such pleasure in their company. Stegner's powerful but unassuming narrative traces the bond that develops between the Langs and the Morgans from their first meeting in 1937 through their eventual separation on the occasion of Charity's death from cancer.

In chapters that alternate between their present older age (60s) and their younger years, we learn about their romances and their struggles. I could smell the woods, feel I was inside the Langs' house and had picnics with them and their extended family. They share hopes, dreams and a desire to contribute; they wish to leave their individual marks on the world. There’s no doubt that Stegner was awed by nature, as the passages of the surroundings were so wondrously descriptive. And when reading these books you find – or at least I find (I should shift my point of reference to me not you) that I am seeing things in my daily routine through a sort of cloud that at first I don’t recognize but then suddenly it dawns on me that it’s from the book I’m reading! When we first meet Charity and Sid at the beginning in the small mid-western town, they have two young children with one on the way. There’s a point in this novel when Charity’s son-in-law, Moe, asks Larry why he hasn’t penned the one book that’s screaming to be written, the story of Sid, Charity, Larry and Sally’s lives.
