He thought the general stance of British critics "was to admire the film's power and professionalism while condemning its amorality and excessive violence".

Back in town, Jack is threatened by henchmen who want him to leave town, but he fights them off, capturing and interrogating one to find out who wants him gone. Although he is not credited as such in the film, Caine has been acknowledged in retrospect as a co-producer. Mike Hodges said in 2003 he had still not seen the remake, but was informed by a friend that it was "unspeakable". Locations along the east coast of England had been scouted by Hodges and Klinger in the spring of 1970, to find a landscape that suggested a "hard, deprived background".

His son brought him a DVD of the film back from Hong Kong and he tried to watch it, but the region format was incompatible "so we put it in the dustbin". There is intense violence in the book and yet at the same time there is incredible poetry to it all, particularly in the stunning ending (which was changed in both film versions). And Hodges’ film very much embodied that unique decade — and it sure went out of its way to say the Age of Aquarius was definitely over, didn’t it? We don't get to see much of the course but we do see the finish of one race in front of the paddock and the start of another race. decided not to give it a UK theatrical release, anticipating the film would be savaged by British critics and fans.

No missing or damaged pages, no creases or tears, no underlining or highlighting of text, and no writing in the margins. Upper corners and spine ends very slightly bumped, small erasure mark to front free end paper, a fine copy in a fine dust jacket with a touch of shelf wear to spine ends, tiny closed tear to lower front panel.A censored version was released in West Germany on 6 August 1971, with a running time nine minutes shorter than the original. Andrew Spicer has written that "he [Klinger] sensed its potential to imbue the British crime thriller with the realism and violence of its American counterparts".
