James Brown worked on the NME, founded Loaded, Jack and Leeds, Leeds, Leeds magazines, and was Editor-in-Chief of British GQ.

Which leads me to my next point that I don't think as a reader you really get to know James, he only briefly lets the reader in to his emotions when he talks of his Mum's struggles with her mental health and her death, the rest of the time it feels like he's putting on a front. By the age of twenty two he was features editor of the New Musical Express and at the ripe old age of twenty seven he launched Loaded, a magazine that gave the publishing world such a kick up the arse it hasn’t been able to sit down properly since. When I arrive, his girlfriend and youngest son are just off for a spot of blackberry picking – what could be more idyllic?Suddenly it’s colourful, unabashed reverberations could be felt everywhere, from Chris Evans’ TFI Friday to the newly revamped Radio One. Please Note: By their very nature, all signed books will have been handled several times before they get to you. Bright, loud, funny, provocative, ambitious and careless, loaded was read from the barracks of Afghanistan to the England dressing room at Euro '96.

By 2007, the magazine was taking its staff on a straight pride march around London under the editorship of Martin Daubney, now deputy leader of Laurence Fox’s Reclaim party. It helped that Condé Nast were waving heaps of money at Brown for him to edit the upmarket fashion magazine GQ, believing it had got stuffy and needed an injection of fun. The cocky version of himself that he seemed to want to paint appeared to be bravado to hide a softer side. He is quite open throughout about his recreational refreshments of choice and some of the comical capers that resulted. One of Browns traits was being a tad cocky, which probably helped him get the gigs and into gigs he was employed to earn his keep.He rediscovered his love of music, reconnected with smaller music venues, hung out with the Reeves guy that was in the Matrix and the one that was partnered with Bob Mortimer, and went clubbing. The Face had been fronted at the time by Kate Moss, and there was a backlash against wafer-thin models. Cockiness was one of his self-defence mechanisms (“ Don Revie once said attack is the best form of defence, and a lot of his Leeds team is reflected in my personality”); controlling his food intake was another.

It’s the first one I’ve listened to where the author bursts out laughing, remembering the times he’s writing about.

Loaded 's unexpected success legitimised (and paid for) James's lifestyle, and it wasn't until he crashed and burned at GQ, and went through rehab, that any sense of perspective kicked in. His stay with GQ is cut short, through no fault of his own as it happens, but as a friend of his said at the time, “Tarantino was never going to last very long in Disneyland”. Under the mentorship of IPC’s Alan Lewis, he brought together a small team to create a rough sketch of the mag. Bookplates are official labels which are signed by the author and then fixed to the title page of the book.
