Description

Der kleine Junge in diesem Buch hat ein großes Problem: Seine Eltern sind nicht mehr heile, sie wollen sich trennen und daher braucht er dringend Elternkleber aus dem Bastelladen. The illustrations highlight how, to them, it can feel like their whole world is breaking and changing which gives the adult reader a perspective on how the process can feel very overwhelming for the child/children involved. It is about a little boy who is trying to cope with his parent separating but because his world is torn apart, its hard for him to do.

Wonderful job on showing how a divorce will feel for a kid, like his world, like his everything is also broken apart. I also /loved/ the artistic concept that all the things around the child on each page were broken too. Whilst this is effective in delving deeper into the child's thoughts, I could not help but feel that it reduced the impact of the reading, as the book felt too long and drawn out. Told from the perspective of the boy allows the reader to step into his shoes and experience the emotions he is feeling and empathise with him.The book follows the story in a sensitive and soft tone, and would be a perfect read with a child who is experiencing this in their life. However by removing the crack later in the story but still having the same whole page illustrations provides a key visual message that in time the situation does heal. Mum and Dad Glue” is an exceptionally well written and beautifully illustrated picture book by the absolutely fantastic Kes Gray.

The illustrations and rhymes are lighthearted and make the book feel very accessible for adults and children. For my future classroom, I hope to get a copy of this book for children to read if they are ever in the same situation as the main character of this story so that they are able to understand what is happening more. This book will be a great book to have in my classroom to assist children when coming to terms with their parents splitting up! On its own terms, it's an ideal book, but it's not a picture book for general reading - not that it aims to be.

However in doing this, Gray only places the reader into the situation of the protagonist, wondering when their inner turmoil will be over.

Essentially, the little boy, who is trying to use an inanimate tool, to fix a very real, tangible problem, comes to find that some things in life you cannot fix. Mum and Dad Glue is a kindly voice that will hopefully make them understand and feel a little better. The moral of this story is that it is not anyones fault his parents have fallen out of love with each other, and it doesn't mean they have fallen any less out of love with him.If you require any changes to this format please indicate in 'Any comments or special requirements' box at checkout. Separation is incredibly common amongst parents so this book will be good to use in classrooms to explore it and develop an understanding of it. Gray did not want to give false hope to any child that could be experiencing the demise of their parents’ marriage - this would be unethical, and could be potentially damaging to a child's emotional state (especially, for example, if Gray wrote a story where the parent's got back together, and everything mapped out harmoniously, because that could create a distorted, misleading expectation in a child's mind).
